The 2nd Bundesliga 1979/80 was played in two seasons (North and South) to 20 (North) and 21 (South) teams. Every year, six teams advance to the B-Junior Bundesliga. The B-Juniorinnen-Bundesliga is the highest German division for female U-17 soccer teams. Friedrichshafen prevailed 3-1 after four games and won the German championship for the sixth time in a row. SV Darmstadt 98, as season champions, secured promotion to the Bundesliga after two years in the second division, but were relegated after just one season. The championship was played in a league with no final tournament or play-off games. The league is booming and stadiums are mostly sold out. The two relegation games between the sixteenth place in the 2nd Bundesliga and the third place in the 3rd division were played on May 11th and 14th, 2012. SC Freiburg, champions of the 2008/09 season, was the first club to receive this trophy on May 24, 2009. It began on August 15, 2008 and ended on May 24, 2009 with the 34th day of play.
